The Recreation for Life Foundation acknowledged outstanding recreation and parks development at their inaugural Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence
The Recreation for Life Foundation gathered Alberta's industry leaders
in the recreation and parks field at the Citadel Theatre in
Edmonton 2010 for the inaugural Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence. The
gala event honoured the achievements of those within Alberta's corporate
sector who exemplify the very best in the development of recreation,
parks, and community building.
"The Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence provide a significant
opportunity to recognize and celebrate the vital role of Alberta's
corporate sector in providing recreation and parks services, products,
and infrastructure that make our communities great places to live," says
Barry Mitchelson, Chair of the Recreation for Life Foundation. "We
firmly believe that personal health, community well-being, and quality
of life in Alberta are directly tied to the achievements and innovation
of these outstanding corporations and organizations."

John Furlong, CEO of VANOC, delivered the event's
keynote address, which focused on the significance of recreation and
sport to country, province, and community building, and the importance
of local, grassroots sport and recreation infrastructure for the health
of citizens, and the development of emerging elite athletes.

About the Awards
The Recreation for Life
Foundation and its partner, Alberta Recreation and Parks Association,
(ARPA) launched the
Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence on Thursday, April 15,
2010. We are now gearing up for the 2012 event and are very excited as the inaugural event proved to be a huge success. We anticipate a whole new array of award nominations and the event will be hosted in Calgary on Thursday May 10th, 2012 at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Recipients will be acknowledged at this biennial prestigious awards gala event and ceremony. The intent of this program is to honour achievement, excellence,
creativity, and innovation by Alberta's corporate sector and reinforces
the critical role business people and companies play in enhancing
personal health, community well-being, and quality of life and linked
directly to recreation and parks development.
Provincial recreation and parks provides delivery to
three main sectors; public sector (government), the voluntary sector and
the private/corporate sector. This awards program is targeted
specifically to the private and corporate industry sectors.The
Recreation for Life Foundation Recreation Industry Awards of
Excellence is a province-wide initiative that recognizes
the achievements of individuals or teams within corporations, businesses
and private sector who symbolize the very best in our sector and
communities.
The awards will showcase and celebrate best practices,
encourage emulation and draw attention to the value of Alberta companies
and entrepreneurs within the recreation and parks industry in Alberta.
The awards will focus on innovations in land development, architecture,
manufacturing, retail, engineering, marketing and related
entrepreneurial leadership.
Using recreation as a
catalyst, these contributors are those who contribute to
healthier and more active communities by utilizing and applying an
understanding of community commitment and development strategies.
Through these awards, recognition
will contribute to community leaders increased citizen engagement,
higher levels of participation in active living, recreation, and sport,
healthier people reflecting balanced lifestyles, and more diverse and
culturally rich communities.
Call for Nominations
Stay tuned as the official call for nominations will be going out by mid November 2011. For those who get their nominations or registration for the event in prior to the deadlines dates you will be entered into the early bird draws for an array of exciting prizes supplied by the City of Calgary.
