Town of Westlock

Town of Westlock Logo

A little background ...

The Town of Westlock is a thriving community with a strong recreational and agricultural base, as well as several small industries, including a busy retail and service sector. Situated at the crossroads of hwy 18 and hwy 44 in north central Alberta, Westlock is home to just under five thousand residents and maintains to be a bustling hub for the many outlying communities within the region. With a variety of employment opportunities, top quality education and health care services, and a high quality of life, residents continue to recognize Westlock as the place to raise a family for generations to come.

Recreation and Parks

The social fabric of the community is forever evolving and the Town strives diligently to meet the changing needs of its occupants. Extensive sports and recreation programs are offered for people of all ages throughout the year. Minor sporting clubs and interest groups flourish with one theme reigning strong amongst Westlockians; actively involved. Our state of the art facilities are something all residents appreciate and take pride in, as they are well used by locals and visitors throughout the year.

The spacious and modern Westlock Recreation Centre is an interactive facility housing a zero-depth pool with a large and brand new spray park area, a hot tub, racquetball courts, a weight room, and an exercise room. In addition to this wonderful facility, construction is underway for a brand new multi sporting facility The Westlock Rotary Spirit Centre. It will feature a field house, an exercise weight room, an aerobics area, a two lane walking track, a child minding area, meeting room space, an arena, and connection to the existing curling rink facility. The action doesn`t stop here!

Outdoor sporting facilities include several ball diamonds, tennis courts, a race track, horseshoe pits, and an upbeat skateboard park. Playgrounds are peppered throughout the residential areas, with plenty of green space for play as well. The Westlock Rotary Trail, a favourite among local runners, walkers and cyclists, features a 10km paved trail circling to outlying neighbourhoods of town, winding through peaceful areas away from the hustle and bustle.

Not to forget are the Westlock Golf Course and the Tawatinaw Valley Ski Hill, only a short drive from the outskirts of town. Both make for a popular day trip or weekend adventure for those who enjoy a lush round of 18 holes or who want to hit the slopes.

Having recently been selected as one of the co-hosts for the upcoming 2013 55+ Summer Games, with the Town of Barrhead, we are confident participants and their families will find Westlock to be a wonderful breath of fresh air, a community with hospitality and spirit unlike any other.

Experience Westlock ...

Whether you’re here for an event or just passing through, rest your head in Westlock. It`s home to a variety of lodging facilities, from quaint bed & breakfasts, motels & inns, to hotels. For an outdoor experience with the convenience of in town proximity, our municipal Mountie Park Campground is the perfect place to set up camp over the summer months as well.

Our wide variety of locally owned restaurant establishments, as well as other recognizable chains will leave your stomach satisfied. Trust the locals on where to go. They are always willing to lend a hand, give you directions, or recommend a stop along your journey.

Arts and Culture

Cultural programs such as live theatre, featuring both local talent and professional actors, a live music series each fall, and various art classes and shows, are well attended and enjoyed by the citizens of the town and surrounding area. The Canadian Tractor Museum and The Pioneer Museum are rich with heritage and a popular stop for visitors, locals and school children within the area. Our weekly farmers market is always a treat, along with the annual craft shows, the town fair and parade, light up at Christmas, and Canada Day. In addition, there is always the opportunity to enrol in a variety of programming from cooking, scrapbooking, photography, a language learning experience and much more!
